Abstract

Efficiency Evaluation of Insurance Companies Using Data Envelopment Analysis from the Perspective of Different Classifications
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In today’s world, the economic growth and development of each country play an important role in determining its international position, and countries seek to improve their development indicators in order to enhance this position. The insurance industry, as one of the indicators of development, is regarded on the one hand as one of the major economic institutions and, on the other hand, as a sector that supports the activities of other economic institutions. Given the specific characteristics of insurance companies’ financial statements and their differences from those of other industries, no specific indicator has so far been considered for measuring efficiency in the insurance industry. Therefore, the present study aims to develop an indicator for measuring the efficiency of insurance companies and to examine their efficiency with regard to different operational characteristics.
METHODS: To determine appropriate indicators for measuring efficiency, the relevant inputs and outputs were identified using the opinions of experts in the insurance industry. The insurance companies were then classified according to their geographical scope of operation, company age, concentration of the insurance portfolio in life and non-life lines, and type of ownership, including private, state-owned, and quasi-state-owned companies. The efficiency of each group was subsequently evaluated.
FINDINGS: The results showed that the efficiency of insurance companies operating in free zones was higher than that of companies operating in the mainland. In addition, the efficiency of non-major companies was higher than that of the four old and major insurance companies. In the classification based on portfolio composition, life insurance companies had higher efficiency than non-life insurance companies. Finally, the comparison based on ownership type showed that private insurance companies were more efficient than state-owned and quasi-state-owned companies.
CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the efficiency of insurance companies is not the same across different groups and that characteristics such as geographical scope of operation, company age, insurance portfolio concentration, and type of ownership can be considered when comparing the efficiency of insurance companies. In addition, identifying inputs and outputs that are consistent with the characteristics of insurance companies’ financial statements can provide a basis for measuring efficiency in this industry.
